Gareth Bale being awarded PFA Player of the Year has been widely panned, but when presented with the option to show that they could in fact pick better than the players, the fans... well, you be the judge. Your ESPN PFA Fans' Player of the Year is: Raul Meireles?
Raul Meireles Wins PFA Fans’ Player Of The Year
Not to take anything away from Meireles, who's been quite good this season, but a) he hasn't even been Liverpool's best player b) He hasn't even been their best midfielder (Lucas) and c) No. Is there an explanation for this travesty? As it turns out, yes. Fans couldn't vote for just anyone, you see. They had to vote from the pool of players who managed to win PFA Player of the month this season, which obviously included Meireles, but also managed to restrict his competition to Samir Nasri, Dimitar Berbatov, Fernando Torres somehow, and David Luiz (Meireles won in February). Nasri still should have won, of course, but it's less of an insane vote than it appears at first glance.
That doesn’t make the process any less insane, however. If the players can vote for anyone, why can’t the fans?
