Sunderland, coming off a run which has seen them gain one point out of a possibly twenty-seven, didn't look like they were great bets to stop the rot against Wigan Athletic, especially after losing both Phil Bardsley and Danney Welbeck to injuries in the first twenty-five minutes at the Stadium of Light. The hosts were stodgy, the visitors weren't much better, and a draw seemed more or less inevitable at halftime. Then Wigan scored and things got a little bit crazy.
Sunderland 4-2 Wigan Athletic: Injury-Hit Sunderland Mount Stirring Comeback
Black Cats striker Asamoah Gyan instantly cancelled out Mohamed Diame's excellent long-range effort before he too was forced off the pitch due to picking up a hamstring problem. What happens when you take the last striker out of a team that can't score? Apparently, you get three goals in twenty minutes. Sunderland were suddenly rampant, with Jordan Henderson notching twice and Stephane Sessegnon scoring from the penalty spot to secure the win, and Franco di Santo's late striker was just a consolation goal for Wigan, who find themselves back in the relegation places following the loss. It seems like Steve Bruce has finally had enough miserable luck, though - it's nice to see Sunderland finally have a good game, even if it's too little too late in terms of coming anywhere near competiting for Europe.
