Oh dearie me. Emmanual Adebayor has done more than his share of tormenting Tottenham Hotspur during his Arsenal days, and the Real Madrid striker has just made himself even more hated amongst Spurs fans by giving the home side a very early lead. Angel di Maria earned a corner kick after his shot was deflected behind Heurelhio Gomes’ goal, and the delivery was turned in at the far post by Adebayor, who only joined Real in the Janaury transfer window.
Real Madrid Vs. Tottenham Hotspur, 2011 UEFA Champions League: Emmanuel Adebayor Gives Hosts Early 1-0 Lead
The goal was preventable - Adebayor was totally unmarked (Luka Modric being nearby does not count as being marked when the ball’s in the air) and Gomes didn’t exactly cover himself in glory when he attempted to make the save. But the game’s still salvageable. If Tottenham get the next goal things are looking much rosier. They’ve responded reasonably well, with Peter Crouch nodding over from a corner, but they’ve yet to muster a serious attempt on goal.
Crouch has also been booked (deservedly) for a sliding challenge on Sergio Ramos in the Madrid half, as has Adebayor. Yellow cards may be something of a theme for the match, as Madrid are looking at suspensions for many of their most important players should they incur bookings in this match.
