AC Milan have confirmed the signings of Phillippe Mexes and Taye Taiwo for next season. The Serie A champions have long been linked to Mexes and the French central defender posted on his Twitter a month ago that he would join Milan, but now Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed his signing on a free transfer from Roma. He also confirmed the signing of Taiwo on a free transfer from Olympique Marseille, giving the club another option at left back.
AC Milan Confirm Deals For Mexes And Taiwo
"In defense, Milan are sorted,'' Allegri said in a press conference on Monday. "We have taken Mexes and Taiwo.''
The Rossoneri had Seire A’s best defense by a wide margin this season, having surrendered 23 goals so far en route to a title when the next closest team has allowed 36 goals. That isn’t stopping them from bolstering their defense for next season though. With Mexes and Taiwo, they’ve strengthened themselves in the center and also on the left, although Taiwo has always been more of an attacking left back than a defending one.
With the confirmation that Mexes will leave for Milan next season, it mean that he has played his left match at Stadio Olimpico for Roma. The Frenchman had surgery to repair ligaments in his knee last month and has been ruled out for the season so the next time he puts on a shirt, it will be one of Milan’s red and black. How he helps the Milan back line is a question mark though after a sub-par season for Roma prior to his injury.
For Taiwo, his departure will be a big hit for Marseille, even if his moving on is not a surprise. The Nigerian helped the club win Ligue 1 a year ago and has helped them to second place this season. Taiwo also scored the winning goal for Marseille to help them make the Coupe de France final last month, but next season he will be making the move to the San Siro. There, he will be ale to get forward and provide some width for a team whose lack of width was exploited by some of the better teams in the Champions League this season.
