It took a little bit of luck and some poor play by Liverpool, but regardless of how they got there, Tottenham Hotspur now sit in fifth place in the English Premier League, which puts them into the UEFA Europa League if they can hold onto that spot next week.
Liverpool Vs. Tottenham Hotspur: 2-0 Full Time, Spurs In European Place
Rafael van der Vaart scored the opening goal with a fantastic shot from 20 yards out, scoring after a corner kick. Van der Vaart had to be substituted off early in the second half because of an injury, but Spurs were able to find a second goal without him, albeit a very fortunate one. In the 56th minute, John Flanagan took down Steven Pienaar with a shoulder to shoulder challenge. It was barely a foul and it appeared to be outside of the area, but Howard Webb granted a penalty, which Luka Modric converted.
The strike partnership of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll was not as effective as usual this afternoon, while Liverpool's midfield was outplayed. Now, they must hope for a Spurs slip-up if they want to get to Europe next season.
