Justin Braun entered Sunday's game against the New York Red Bulls riding a 13-game goalless streak. He the day tied with Alejandro Moreno for the team lead after scoring his first career hat trick. Shortly after scoring his third goal, Braun was removed in favor of newly signed academy product Chris Cortez as Chivas USA clung to a 3-2 lead.
New York Red Bulls Vs. Chivas USA: Justin Braun’s Hat Trick Gives Goats Lead
The third goal was probably the easiest he's ever scored as all he had to do was tap in a ball that came directly to him off a deflection. Simon Elliott had sent in a free kick that Moreno headed toward goal that ricochetted off the goalpost. The ball came right to Braun's feet.
Braun’s career seemed to be an upward trajectory last season when he scored his ninth goal on Sept. 10, 2010. That he went scoreless in Chivas USA’s last seven matches of the season didn’t seem to be a huge problem, but the scoring drought continued into this year and he eventually lost his starting job.
Despite Chivas USA lacking any pure scorers, Braun started the previous four games on the bench. Braun was only given the start after Marcos Mondaini was given a four-game suspension for his ankle breaking tackle of Javier Morales last week.
