Monarcas Morelia put together a great performance on Sunday night to defeat Cruz Azul 3-0 on the night, 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the 2011 Clausura Liguilla final, but unfortunately, their great performance wasn’t the story. The story was the massive brawl that occurred at the very end of the match, sparked by a fan running onto the field and the completely inappropriate reaction by Cruz Azul’s superstar attacking midfielder, Christian ‘Chaco’ Gimenez.
VIDEO: Massive Brawl Overshadows Monarcas Morelia-Cruz Azul Match
Here’s a video of the start of the brawl, as a fan runs onto the field right before the kickoff that was to follow Jaime Lozano’s clinching goal.
Boom, a kick and a punch to the invading fan by Chaco! I can see he’s been working on his Muay Thai. More soccer fight goodness after the jump.
We’ve got a couple more videos so that you can see the whole story unfolding. This second video shows more of the insanity unfolding, as Cruz Azul goalkeeper headbutts Morelia assistant coach Sergio Martin.
Corona was amazingly not spotted partaking in his shenanigans by the referee, but he will almost certainly be retroactively suspended to start the 2011 Apertura in the fall. Finally, here’s referee Francisco Chacón Gutiérrez handing out red cards to everyone for funsies.
Um, the 2011 Clausura Liguilla final starts next week? Congrats, Morelia. Hopefully your tie against Pumas UNAM results in less of these kind of shenanigans.
