Diego Maradona Back In Football, To Manage Dubai Club

The worst part about Argentina's loss in the World Cup quarterfinals was it meant the end of Diego Maradona. Argentina went out, Maradona wasn't brought back to manage the team and one of the greatest players to ever play, but more importantly one of the great characters in professional sports, was out of the limelight. Not anymore though. Maradona is back, kind of.

The Argentinean has been hired to manage Al Wasl, a club based in Dubai. Financial terms of the deal were not released, but the one thing that is clear is that Maradona is back in the managing game and will be expected to deliver Al Wasl their first United Arab Emirates League title since 2007 when the season starts in September.

“Al Wasl Sports Club has become synonymous with achievements of this caliber, and we are very pleased to be welcoming Maradona to a long line of accolades in the club’s history,” vice chairman Marwan Bin Bayat said in a statement. “This partnership embodies the vision of the club as it embraces forward thinking developments in the region to establish unprecedented standards for the sport.”

Maradona's playing career, as incredible as it may have been, had its share of controversy. Since he retired, that controversy hasn't stopped. He's made outlandish comments, has had issues with tax payments in Italy and battled drug abuse. With that, his weight has fluctuated to make the 5'5'' man look somewhat comical. His decisions and comments as manager of Argentina leading up to and during the World Cup only added to the character that Maradona has become, a character that will be a joy for neutrals to observe now that he is back in the sport.
