MLS Commissioner Don Garber has long implied that it would take a heft transfer fee to allow Landon Donovan to leave the league. If a report in at Boston.com is to be believed, AS Roma is getting ready to offer the equivalent of $14 million in exchange for Donovan's rights.
AS Roma Reportedly Ready To Offer $14M Transfer For Landon Donovan
For Donovan’s transfer, Roma has budgeted about 10 million euros, and the club would match his $2.3 million MLS salary, according to the source. Donovan, 29, is the US national team’s all-time leading scorer with 45 goals.
Fueling this speculation is the fact that Romas was recently acquired by American Thomas DiBenedetto and his stated desire to bring in a United States national team player. While Donovan may not be the best American player, he is arguably the biggest name. More importantly, he's the biggest-name American who is the most easily acquired as other players like Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard are already playing in England and are less likely to be interested in a move to Italy.
