Liverpool FC Transfer Rumors: Brad Friedel Set To Join Reds

There was a strong rumour floating around earlier that Liverpool had leapt into the hunt for Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who's available on a free transfer, and apparently that was for good reason. According to Birmingham Mail reporter Matt Kendrick, the American international is set to reject a contract offer from Villa to make his way back to Anfield (where he played between 1997 and 2000) next season:

If true, this will a) really intensify any rumours about the possible departure of current Liverpool number one Pepe Reina and b) leave Aston Villa with a major goalkeeping problem in that they'd have zero Premier League calibre stoppers. It's not entirely clear why Liverpool would want Friedel at this point unless Reina's going away. This'll make for an interesting little story.
