The team that was the worst offensive side in MLS for the first nine weeks is suddenly looking like an offensive juggernaut. After scoring just six goals during the first 873 minutes of the 2011 season, the Philadelphia Union have scored eight goals in their past 117 minutes. The last six came in their 6-2 win over Toronto FC on Saturday, as they scored more goals in each half than they had scored in any 2011 two-game stretch prior to this week.
Toronto FC Vs. Philadelphia Union: Six-Goal Effort Fuels Huge Union Victory
The Union scored early (Gabriel Farfan in the 2nd minute) and they scored late (Danny Mwanga in the 89th minute). It was Farfan's first career goal, and Mwanga's two-goal, one-assist performance was easily his best of the year. The Union also got a pair of goals from Justin Mapp and got a goal and an assist from Kyle Nakazawa
Amazingly, TFC actually made a game of this at one point. After falling behind 3-0 at halftime, they cut the deficit to 3-2 on a pair of goals from Maicon Santos nine minutes apart. But Mapp’s second goal in the 62nd minute pushed the lead back to two goals, and the rout was one from there.
