In a battle of the winless teams, both teams remained winless. Eric Hassli got the homestanding Vancouver Whitecaps off to a strong start when he scored from the penalty spot, but Luke Rodgers answered with a goal of his own for a 1-1 draw at Empire Stadium. For the Whitecaps, it is their 11th straight match without a win, while the Red Bulls have gone five consecutive matches without a win after a start that made them look like possibly the best team in the league.
Vancouver Whitecaps Vs. New York Red Bulls: Both Sides Remain Winless
To be fair to the Red Bulls, they were playing without Rafa Marquez and Thierry Henry and it showed, especially early when the Whitecaps grabbed a lead. Davide Chiumiento and Camilo executed a pretty give-and-go in the 24th minute and on the end of it, Carlos Mendes took down Camilo. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Hassli put it away for an early 1-0 Vancouver lead.
It took all of 10 minutes for New York to equalize. Roy Miller's long cross field pass to Jan Gunnar Solli opened up space and Solli spotted Rodgers. The Englishmen struck the ball on his first touch and it found net to level the match at 1-1.
Both teams had chances to grab a winner in the second half. They went back and forth on chances, but neither team could convert so they were forced to split the point and remain winless.
