For the first time this season, the Portland Timbers are trailing at Jeld-Wen Field. Perry Kitchen headed in a delivery from Blake Brettschneider in the 14th minute to put DC United up 1-0 on Sunday.
Portland Timbers Vs. DC United: Perry Kitchen Gets United Early Lead
The goal-scoring sequence started on a throw-in deep in the Timbers' defensive third. Chris Pontius found Brettschneider near the endline. Brettschneider was able to redirect the ball back to the front of the goal where Kitchen was able to put it past Troy Perkins.
The Timbers had scored first in each of their first five home MLS matches and have never even yielded the lead after scoring. They have had plenty of experience playing from behind, though, as they’ve yielded the first goal in all five road matches. In two of those, they came back to tie the game. They lost the other three.
Their five-match home winning streak is the longest to start a season for a first-year team since the Los Angeles Galaxy opened with 11 straight wins during the inaugural 1996 season.
