If one wanted to make an argument against any cup finals being two-legged aggregate score affairs, this game would probably be a good one to use as an example. With Peñarol facing a more talented Santos FC side as they started with a clean 0-0 slate, it was obvious they were going to prioritize their defense. Santos, with a home game still to come, were content with this, and decided to more or less try their luck in Brazil next Wednesday. This resulted in the two teams playing to a 0-0 draw, but it was not without controversy.
Copa Libertadores Final, Peñarol Vs. Santos FC Score: 0-0 Full Time
Peñarol might not have deserved to score based on their style of play, but they were certainly robbed of a penalty kick, while they were unlucky to have another closely, but correctly taken away. In the 68th minute, Bruno Rodriguez of Santos intentionally pushed Juan Manuel Olivera in the box as he was going up for a header, but this incident was somehow not spotted by the officials.
Near the end of the game, it appeared that Peñarol had taken an advantage in the final when substitute Diego Alonso scored on an easy tap-in. However, the goal was disallowed for offsides and on the replay, Alonso appears to be a mere inch or two past the last defender in front of the keeper when the ball was played to him.
Peñarol will almost certainly attempt to bunker and capitalize on set pieces in the second leg of the final in Brazil. If Santos can score an early goal, it could be a very interesting match. If not, we might be in for more of the same.
