According to UEFA, they aren’t granting the 2013 Champions League final to Wembley Stadium for financial reasons. No, that would be crude and crass and many other things beginning with ‘c’. Instead, they’re doing it to honour the Football Association’s 150th birthday:
2013 UEFA Champions League Final Awarded To Wembley As Birthday Present To FA, Says Platini
Founded in 1863 the Football Association is the oldest of all the national football associations and in 2013 it will celebrate its 150th anniversary. Given the exceptional nature of this historic moment in our beautiful game, and the fact that we will also celebrate 150 years of the Laws of the Game, we felt it was our duty at UEFA to help the FA celebrate in some special way. For this reason we have decided to return to England and specifically to Wembley Stadium - the home of the English FA – for the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final.
Well that’s quite cute. I didn’t know Michel Platini cared. Word has it that FIFA will get involved in the celebrations by baking the FA a cake made entirely out of cyanide, razor blades and notes demanding the return of the Malvinas to Argentine control.
