Every two years all of the teams in CONCACAF get together to play the Gold Cup and every two years it is held in the United States. That is very different than any other confederation championship. Whereas Euro, Copa America, the Asian Cup or African Cup of Nations rotates from host country to host country, the Gold Cup returns to the same country every year.
U.S.-Hosted Gold Cup Continues To Pack The Stands
That’s because CONCACAF makes a ton more money in the U.S. than they would elsewhere with gigantic stadiums that are filled. This year is no exception and the quarterfinals are proof. Saturday’s quarterfinal doubleheader has completely sold out the 80,000 seat New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ and Sunday’s doubleheader at the 45,423 seat RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. is also sold out.
It is expected that Wednesday’s semifinal doubleheader at the 71,000 seat Reliant Stadium in Houston, TX will also sell out, as will the final at the 93,000 seat Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. So long as the stadiums stay full in gigantic stadiums, don’t expect the tournament to leave U.S. soil for a while.
