It has been quite a long time since the Vancouver Whitecaps last tasted victory. After 12 winless weeks and 14 matches the Whitecaps finally have their second win of the season after beating the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Saturday. Their goal came off the foot of left back Alain Rochat, whose blast from about 25 yards out beat Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon inside the far post. The chance was essentially created by Davide Chiumiento, who made some nifty moves along the sideline before going 1-2 with Eric Hassli and passing it back to Rochat.
Vancouver Whitecaps Vs. Philadelphia Union: Alain Rochat Secures Caps’ 2nd Win
The Whitecaps played probably their best match since their First Kick victory over Toronto FC. They allowed just eight shots and goalkeeper Joe Cannon only had to make one save. They also created numerous scoring opportunities, with forward Hassli coming close on at least a couple occasions.
The Union’s best chance to tie came in stoppage time when Sebastian Le Toux got a good look inside the penalty area, but pushed his shot just wide. The Union have not won in three matches since beating TFC 6-2.
