Portland Timbers Vs. New York Red Bulls: Late Penalty Caps Wild 3-3 Tie

In a match that had already featured an own-goal, a saved penalty, six yellow cards and a red card, it seemed only fitting that the result would ultimately be decided by a last-second penalty. Dwayne De Rosario converted from the spot as the New York Red Bulls pulled out a 3-3 tie with the Portland Timbers after going down two goals in the second half and playing the final few minutes of stoppage time down a man. De Rosario was given the chance after Rodney Wallace handled a cross in the box.

A couple minutes prior to De Rosario's equalizer, the Red Bulls went down a man after Thierry Henry was shown a straight red card. There was no video of the incident, but reports suggested he and Adam Moffat got into a bit of a tussle. Moffat was shown a yellow card, but neither seemed particularly riled prior to Salazar reached for his pocket. In the match, the Red Bulls were whistled for 25 fouls and given five cards, while the Timbers were called for five fouls and given two cautions.

Even before the stoppage time, the match had already been pretty wild. The Red Bulls took the early lead on an Austin Da Luz goal in the 5th minute. The Timbers would eventually equalize on a Jack Jewsbury strike in the 48th minute and took their first lead about a minute later when Kevin Goldwaithe backheeled it past Red Bulls goalkeeper Greg Sutton. The Timbers extended their lead to 3-1 in the 68th minute when Stephen Keel scored an own goal when he tried to clear a cross from Jorge Perlaza.

Although a two-goal lead seemed reasonably safe, it proved anything but. Henry scored his league-leading eighth goal of the season in the 73rd minute, which actually led to Rodney Wallace picking up a yellow card for delaying the restart. Just three minutes later, it looked as if the Timbers would regain their two-goal advantage, but Jewsbury’s penalty was stopped by Sutton.
