Chelsea Confirms Andre Villas-Boas As New Manager
It is incredible that such a young manager is taking over one of the world’s biggest clubs, but Villas-Boas is already amazingly accomplished. It also gives the club the opportunity to beging building a new team for a new era after spending the last several years trying to stretch what they could out of the squad build by Jose Mourinho, who also joined the Blues as the next great young manager from Porto seven years ago.
Villas-Boas is a Mourinho prodige, having worked under him at Porto, then at Chelsea and Internazionale before getting the opportunity to manage his own club. Now Chelsea is bringing Villa-Boas back to the club where he was an assistant for three years.
A Chelsea statement said: “Andre was the outstanding candidate for the job. He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time. His ambition, drive and determination matches that of Chelsea and we are confident Andre’s leadership of the team will result in greater successes in major domestic and European competitions.
“Andre will bring his coaching experience back to a club he is already very familiar with, having previously worked here for three years. He has always been highly regarded at Chelsea and everyone here looks forward to welcoming him back and working with him.”
Reports have indicated that Chelsea are paying Porto £13.3 million in compensation for Villas-Boas, who emerged as one of the top young managers in the world at Porto. Last season he won the Portuguese Primera title, the Portuguese Cup and the Europa League, becoming the youngest manager to ever win a European title.
It is expected that he will bring several members of his staff with him to Chelsea and possibly even some players as well. Porto’s leading scorer last season, Radamel Falcao, who also set a new record for goals in a European competition, has already been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
