With starting goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts going down with an injury and backup goalkeeper Josh Saunders receiving a red card, the Los Angeles Galaxy were forced to play midfielder Mike Magee in goal for more than a half. It might not have always been pretty, but Magee managed to keep the clean sheet and salvaged a point as the Galaxy tied their California Clasico rivals 0-0 on Saturday.
San Jose Earthquakes Vs. LA Galaxy: Mike Magee Plays Goalkeeper, Salvages Point
As much credit as Magee may deserve, the San Jose Earthquakes probably deserve a healthy dose of blame, too. Although they fired off 26 shots and put seven of them on frame, they really never tested Magee. Magee was forced to make three saves, but none of them were particularly difficult. The Earthquakes' best chance came in the 89th minute, and that save was really just a product of Magee getting himself into the proper position.
The tie runs the Galaxy's unbeaten streak to 10 matches and continues a run of form which has seen them lose just once in their past 16. Since losing 4-1 to Real Salt Lake on March 26, the Galaxy have gone 8-1-7 and outscored their opponents by 12 goals.
Now, they'll be getting Landon Donovan back after he missed their last four while with the United States Gold Cup team. Without their leading scorer, the Galaxy went 1-0-3.
