Canadian goalkeeper Greg Sutton may have been relegated to the bench for this game, but that didn't stop the farcical behaviour from continuing between the New York Red Bulls sticks. The Red Bulls, in the midst of a brutal road trip in which they had dropped points to both the Portland Timbers and the Seattle Sounders, looked as though they had a chance to take three points from the Chicago Fire but ultimately failed to hold onto their first half lead, with keeper Bouna Coundoul primarily responsible.
Chicago Fire Vs. New York Red Bulls: New York Held To 1-1 Draw
The visitors had the better of the early going, and the scoring was opened through Joel Lindpere thanks to a ridiculous error on the part of Fire defender Yamith Cuesta, who completely failed to deal with a lackadaisical long ball from Thierry Henri and allowed the Estonian to latch onto possession before firing a quick shot past Sean Johnson.
Marco Pappa would level matters in the 57th minute, however, when he picked up a bouncing ball from well outside the area and fired in a speculative shot. Instead of stopping it, Coundoul opted do hop over it, which is I imagine first on the list of things not to do in goalkeeping school. He did have the good grace to look sufficiently embarrassed that the ball ended up rolling into the back of the net.
The Fire had a few chances to send the home crowd happy at Toyota Park, but Coundoul - this time - was equal to them. The match would end 1-1, and New York will rue more points dropped, especially as the injury status of captain Rafael Marquez is currently unknown.
