As announced by US Soccer on twitter this afternoon, Landon Donovan will not be in the United States’ lineup to face Spain tonight due to an undisclosed illness.
USA Vs. Spain: Landon Donovan Out Due To Illness
#USMNT_lockerroom Landon Donovan has been ruled out of the lineup due to illness.
Donovan, the leading scorer in United States history, is an automatic starter in not only every competitive game, but every exhibition when fit. Even if he is close to being healthy enough to play tonight, it’s probably a good idea for Bob Bradley to rest him, as the United States has a competitive fixture against Canada on Tuesday.
There are a wide variety of potential options to replace Donovan, though all are far from ideal. There were rumors that Clint Dempsey might be deployed as a central attacking midfielder or withdrawn striker, but Donovan’s illness will almost certainly rule that out, as Dempsey will now be needed on the wing.
Alejandro Bedoya is the most like-for-like replacement for Donovan, but Bradley might not be looking at him as an option as he was not in the original squad before Benny Feilhaber’s injury. Chris Wondolowski, usually a striker, has played extensively on the wing for San Jose Earthquakes. Bradley could also take this as an opportunity to get a look at Freddy Adu, but most likely, the man who will now start the game is Sacha Kljestan.
