Odds are the United States will not be able to defeat Spain in Saturday's international friendly like they did last time they played the world champions at the 2009 Confederations Cup. Back in 2009, the U.S. had all of their top players and were able to stun Spain. Today, they will be without Landon Donovan, Carlos Bocanegra and Jonathan Bornstein. Freddy Adu will also miss the match, but it is the first three that will really hurt the Americans.
USA Vs. Spain, International Friendly: Donovan, Bocanegra, Bornstein, Adu Out
Donovan is ill and while he can play, the U.S. has decided to rest him ahead of Tuesday’s Gold Cup match against Canada. The absence of Bocanegra means that the Americans will be without their captain and Bornstein is the closest thing they have to a true left back, leaving the U.S. very exposed at the back. Adu was a surprise choice for the roster and many were hoping to see him against Spain to get an idea for whether or not he will be able to make an impact in the World Cup.
Before the match has even started, the U.S. is at a distinct disadvantage with so many top players out. Odds are today’s match will look nothing like 2009.
