Well, that had been coming since...the start of the game. After having one good goal disallowed and another shot hit the crossbar, Spain now lead the United States in the 28th minute, thanks to a goal by Santi Cazorla, set up by David Silva. Silva has been Spain’s most inventive attacking player until this point in the game, and it’s only fitting that he’s the man who set up the inevitable goal.

Silva got onto the ball by making an overlapping run on the wing, into the left hand side of the penalty area. He received a through ball and got past Jonathan Spector easily before pulling back a low cross to the penalty spot. Santi Cazorla was completely unmarked when he went to fill that space, and he finished the move with a shot into the top corner, giving Spain the lead.
The defense by the USMNT on the goal was poor, with the majority of the players ball watching instead of paying attention to the movement of the Spain players. That made it easy for Cazorla to get open, and that’s why Spain lead.
