It’s all coming undone for the United States, and based on the opening part of the game, this shouldn’t be the least bit surprising to anyone. Santi Cazorla scored the first goal of the game, catching the United States ball-watching, and this most recent goal wasn’t a whole lot different. It was created in a different manner and finished by a different player - Alvaro Negredo - but the basic issues are the same.
USA Vs. Spain, 2011 International Friendly: Alvaro Negredo Goal Makes It 2-0
This goal didn’t come from a slow build-up, but from a long ball over the top. Negredo got between and past Eric Lichaj and Tim Ream to get onto the long ball from deep in midfield and put it past Tim Howard easily, putting Spain ahead 2-0.
Lichaj and Ream are showing their age at the moment, having the kind of game most have come to expect from both players. They’re actually looking pretty good most of the time, but one big mistake has overshadowed the positives.
