As 0-0 draws go, this has been a pretty entertaining one. Brazil have had plenty of chances to put goals past Paraguay, but have been denied every time by goalkeeper Justo Villar, who's made a number of impressive saves to keep his team in the game.
Copa America 2011 Quarterfinals, Brazil Vs. Paraguay: 0-0 After 90 Minutes; Game Goes To Extra Time
Brazil dominated the first half, but failed to create much of anything. The best chances were falling to Santos striker Neymar, but the 19-year-old’s shooting radar was off all game, skidding his best chance well wide when one on one with Villar. The goalkeeper was also forced into a good save from centre back Lucio after a free kick found him lurking with intent in the six yard box, but other than that not much was happening. Brazil were keeping the ball, and Paraguay were defending.
The second half was a slightly different story as the favourites sacrificed some possession for creativity, opening things up and letting Paraguay have their say, too. Brazil were still the better side after the break, of course, and Villar had to step his game up to keep out the likes of Pato, Paulo Henrique Ganso and Robinho, but Paraguay were getting more of the ball than they’d seen in the first half, and that made for a very exciting game.
Ultimately, Brazil failed to break down a stubborn defence, and the first ninety minutes ended scoreless. We go, therefore, to extra time and possibly penalties. Just what Paraguay would have wnated when they started the match, I’d wager.
