The U.S. women’s national soccer team wasn’t supposed to have much trouble with Colombia on this Saturday in their 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup Group Stage match: the South American nation is making its first Women’s World Cup appearance, while the U.S. is the top-ranked team in the world. But after a first half marked by U.S. dominance on the field if not the scoreboard, Megan Rapinoe broke through in the second half with a goal and a celebration that echoed Bruce Springsteen.

After a strike from just inside the box to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead, Rapinoe ran to the corner of the pitch, picked up an on-field microphone, tapped it in the classic “Is this thing on?” motion, and proceeded to sing either “Gooooooallllll, U.S.A.!” to the tune of the chorus of The Boss’ “Born in the U.S.A.” ... or that line from the chorus itself.
There may be more creative, elaborate, and smoother celebrations in the sporting world, but at the beginning of this Fourth of July weekend, Rapinoe’s certainly feels like the sweetest.
