Bayern Munich Vs. FC Zurich, UEFA Champions League Playoff Round: Preview

Bayern Munich are big favorites against FC Zurich, but the Swiss side is just talented enough to give them serious trouble.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A Swiss Super League team that had a great season last year is struggling so far this year. They’re in a UEFA Champions League playoff tie against a much bigger side and they’re massive underdogs. Sound familiar? That was exactly the situation that BSC Young Boys of Bern were in last season before they stunned Tottenham Hotspur. They were eventually knocked out, but not before sending shockwaves throughout the footballing world. On Wednesday, FC Zurich has a chance to do the same to Bayern Munich.

The Bavarian giants are not off to a great start in the Bundesliga, and it’s not a stretch to paint them as a team who are vulnerable. They were poor against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first game of the Bundesliga season as they lost 1-0 and they needed a stoppage time winner to defeat Wolfsburg in Week 2. Despite their top notch personnel, Bayern do not look like giants of world football at the moment.

Still, it will take a miracle for Zurich to get anything out of this first leg at the Allianz Arena. The future looks bright for the very talented and extremely young side, lead by forward Admir Mehmedi and midfielder Adrian Nikci, but their relative lack of experience compared to their opponents will probably be their downfall in the end. However, they have enough raw talent on the books that Bayern cannot afford to take them lightly.

The game kicks off at 2:45 pm ET, 7:45 pm BST on Wednesday and can be seen on Fox Soccer Channel in the USA.
