Bayern Munich Vs. FC Zurich, UEFA Champions League Playoff Round: Robben Puts On A Show In Bayern Win

The first goal came early on, thanks to a cross by Robben and a headed finish from Schweinsteiger. Bayern would continue to dominate throughout the first half, but could not find another goal to show for it. That trend continued deep into the second half, with Gomez missing a number of chances, but Robben finally put the match and possibly the tie to bed with an absolutely stunning volley from inside of the penalty area that looped into the back of the net to sink Zurich.

Bayern travel to Switzerland to play the second leg next week, where the hosts will need nothing short of a miracle to advance.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A Swiss Super League team that had a great season last year is struggling so far this year. They’re in a UEFA Champions League playoff tie against a much bigger side and they’re massive underdogs. Sound familiar? The Bavarian giants are not off to a great start in the Bundesliga, and it’s not a stretch to paint them as a team who are vulnerable. They were poor against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the first game of the Bundesliga season as they lost 1-0 and they needed a stoppage time winner to defeat Wolfsburg in Week 2. Despite their top notch personnel, Bayern do not look like giants of world football at the moment.
