Jimmy Conrad will announce his retirement on Thursday, according to a release from Chivas USA. The 34-year-old defender has been out since March when he suffered what was deemed a mild concussion. He was cleared to return back in May, but has suffered persistent headaches and has yet to fully recover. Conrad only played two games for Chivas USA, who had selected him in the Re-Entry Draft.

He will go down in history as one of the league’s top defender, having started 275 matches over 13 seasons and for three teams. He’s been around so long, in fact, that two teams he played for have since changed their names (the San Jose Clash and Kansas City Wizards). Conrad was named MLS’s Defender of the Year in 2005 and was named to the Best XI four times. He also earned 27 caps with the United States National Team.
In addition to being a standout player, he also earned a reputation for being one of the league’s more articulate players. At one point, he wrote a regular column for ESPN, he was a co-host on MLS Radio and he had a weekly radio show in Kansas City. Many consider him a strong candidate to land a commentating job on TV.
