Jean Makoun Moves To Olympiakos On Loan

Jean Makoun is on his way out of Villa Park for reasons nobody’s really been able to fathom. The Cameroonian midfielder will join Athens club Olympiakos on a season-long loan deal.

In a move so bizarre that I'm not really sure how to report it, Aston Villa appear to have allowed central midfielder Jean Makoun to join Greek outfit Olympiakos on a season-long loan with a view towards permanence. The transfer has been officially confirmed, according to Villa beat reporter Matt Kendrick:

This is an odd decision for a number of reasons. Let’s look at them.

  1. Jean Makoun is was one of Aston Villa's two best central midfielders.
  2. Aston Villa have no midfield depth.
  3. Aston Villa also have no creativity in the centre with Barry Bannan and Jean Makoun not playing.
  4. Jean Il Makoun sounds like one of the Beastie Boys.

Nope, still can’t really wrap my head around it. Makoun, of course, was a Gerard Houllier purchase in January from lyon, and the recent change of manager appears to have put him in the doghouse while the... less French-seemingly players are experiencing a new McLeish of life under the current regime. Jean must wish that his name was spelled ‘MacCoun’.
