Bayer Leverkusen Goalkeeper Fabian Giefer Suffers Concussion
Fabian Giefer suffered a concussion toward the end of Bayer Leverkusen’s match with Mainz 05 on Sunday.

The injury occurred in the 84th minute when Mainz forward Eric Choupo-Moting ran through the back line. Giefer collected the ball and Choupo-Moting attempted to jump over the goalkeeper, but his knee struck Giefer in the head. The goalkeeper was on the ground for a few extra moments, but he didn’t seem injured and played the remaining few minutes of the match.
After the match Giefer was transported to Mainz University Medical Center. The club announced on their website that he will remain for a day or two for further observation.
Giefer had an very good performance for Leverkusen, but it is marred by his error in the first half that led directly to a goal for Sami Allagui. Giefer was named the starter for the club’s first league match of the season after manager Robin Dutt decided to bench David Yelldell following the club’s 4-3 defeat to Dynamo Dresden.
