French Ligue 1 2011, Week 6: Saturday Recap

Think you can predict results in Ligue 1? You are a crazy person! This league is absolutely nuts. Onto the Saturday scores!

Auxerre 1-1 Caen

For two teams smack dab in the middle of the table, this is par for the course. They were about dead even in possession and shots, and they didn’t create too many shots. Probably not worth catching on replay. Issam Jemaa and Benjamin Nivet were the goal scorers.

Brest 2-2 Montpellier

For two teams with solid defensive records, this one was a bit of a surprising game. Montpellier got off to an unsurprising 2-0 lead, but shockingly gave it away. Santiago Gentiletti scored the 88th minute equalizer for Brest with a header on a corner kick.

Lorient 3-0 St. Etienne

Lorient continue to be a pleasant surprise in Ligue 1. Striker Jeremie Aliadiere, a Frenchman, scored his first and second goals in Ligue 1 in this match.

Nice 3-0 Ajaccio

This was a bad performance by Ajaccio, and it’s incredible that it took Nice until the end to put it away. Johan Cavalli of Ajaccio was shown a straight red card for a foul in the box right before halftime, and Luciano Monzón scored to give Nice the lead. For the entirety of the second half, Nice controlled possession but failed to score until the 87th minute. Then they did it again in the 89th. Reports that David Ospina picked flowers behind the Nice goal during the second half are unconfirmed.

Toulouse 3-2 Bordeaux

Talk about an instant classic! Cheick Diabate scored twice in the first half for Bordeaux, sending them into the locker room up 2-0. Toulouse answered quickly after the break, with Franck Tabanou and Etienne Capoue scoring in the 52nd and 59th minutes to level the match. In the 75th minute, Bordeaux keeper Cedric Carrasco was shown a straight red for a foul in the box, but substitute goalkeeper Abdoulaye Keita saved the penalty taken by Tabanou. Toulouse would find their winner, though, with Emmanuel Riviere scoring a stoppage time winner on the counter.

Valenciennes 4-0 Dijon

Good god, are Dijon actually this bad?

Lille 2-2 Sochaux

Thanks to a silly and unnecessary red card picked up by Mathieu Debuchy, Lille conceded a draw to an inferior Sochaux team. Benoit Pedretti was brilliant for Lille, scoring the opener and drawing a penalty - converted by Eden Hazard - for the second goal, but it wasn’t good enough. Sloan Privat scored Sochaux’s equalizer in the 86th minute, snatching a point.
