Cruz Azul got off to a bit of a rough start to the season. While some of their players sat out because of suspensions, the team looked shaky out on the field. They’re back to full strength now though and looked like it on Saturday when they went to Monterrey and managed to come away with a 2-1 win over a Monterrey team that is also back at full strength.
Monterrey Vs. Cruz Azul, 2011 Mexican Primera Apertura: Azul Make Statement With 2-1 Win
Cesar Villaluz needed only four minutes to put Cruz Azul on top, getting on the end of a Edixson Perea and finishing to stun the Monterrey crowd as they were just getting in their seats. Cesar Delgado answered just six minutes later for Monterrey and the match was back on level terms. Monterrey parlayed that goal into momentum as they began to carry the match, but they could turn it into a goal and went into halftime tied 1-1.
Just five minutes after the break, Cruz Azul turned the match again. This time it was Perea doing the finishing as he put away a Javier Aquino pass to put Cruz Azul back on top. Then in the 79th minute, Aldo de Nigris was shown his second yellow card, leaving the home side with only 10 men and essentially putting an end to the match.
The win moves Cruz Azul to third in the Apertura table and just three points behind first place Chivas de Guadalajara. Meanwhile, Monterrey is back in fifth place after missing out on an opportunity to move all the way up to second in the table.
