The New York Red Bulls have suspended Rafa Marquez for Saturday's game against the Portland Timbers after the Designated Player's critical comments of teammates on Wednesday. Coach Hans Backe reportedly met with the team to explain the suspension.
Rafa Marquez Suspended For Saturday’s New York Red Bulls Game
Following Wednesday's loss to Real Salt Lake, Marquez said his teammates were not playing up to his level, but saved his most damning critique for fellow center back Tim Ream.
“He still has quite a lot to learn, and well, he has committed errors that are very infantile and cost us goals.”
Saturday’s game could very well define the Red Bulls’ season. They are currently trailing the Timbers by one point for the final playoff spot and are in danger of missing the post-season, despite having a payroll that is almost five times as big as many of the teams in MLS. Marquez’s salary alone is more than their entire payroll of 15 of 18 MLS teams.
