Just about everyone who's not purposefully trolling seems to be in general agreement: Rafa Marquez was out of line when he not only put himself above his teammates in assessing his performance this season, but threw one of them totally under the bus. As coincidence would have it, Daily Soccer Fix recently talked with the victim in that bus-vs.-teammate collision and noted the stark difference between the way Tim Ream and Marquez are dealing with the New York Red Bulls' struggles and their involvement in those struggles.
Tim Ream Shows The Maturity Rafa Marquez Appears To Lack - Daily Soccer Fix
Ream owned up immediately. He said some of the Red Bulls troubles this year came right down to him.
Then he talked about some of the reasons – but the conversation didn’t come across like someone offering excuses. It sounded like someone trying to understand why 2010 looked like X, but 2011 was unfolding as Y.
He talked about the lack of lineup consistency, and how he’s learning to cope with it. And he’s right about that. After all, back lines (and center back pairings in particular) are like dance partners; the more time they can share on the floor, the stronger the syncopation.
Ream is clearly not having a great season. Quite honestly, he is looking a lot more like a second-round pick out of St. Louis University than the guy who nearly won the MLS Rookie of the Year award. Unlike Marquez, though, he seems to be perfectly aware of this fact and there’s reason to believe he’ll do what he needs to do to get better.
