In a bit of extremely sad news, United Arab Emirates international footballer Theyab Awana has died from injuries sustained in a car crash. He was 21 years old.
Theyab Awana, UAE Football Star, Dies In Car Crash
Awana became famous earlier this year for scoring an incredible back-heeled penalty kick against Lebanon. Though Awana’s coach was unhappy with his tricks, the young winger has remained a fixture in his national team side and was widely considered to be a rising star.
Awana played his club football for Bani Yas Club in the UAE Pro League. He passed away after a car he was traveling in collided with a truck in Al Ain.
UAE soccer president Mohammed Khalfan al-Rumaithi issued the following statement:
“I feel the loss of one of my family,...I felt bitter tragedy. May the almighty bless him and may he rest in eternal peace.”
The UAE is scheduled to play South Korea in a World Cup Qualifier on October 11. The team called off training on Monday so that the players could attend Awana’s funeral.
