A bright start by Manchester City has come to naught. The visitors looked for all the world like taking advantage of a weakened Bayern Munich defence, featuring Jerome Boateng in place of the missing Holger Badstuber, and should certainly have gone ahead when Edin Dzeko found himself in space six yards from goal, but the Bosnian failed to take advantage of his opportunity and his team has now paid the price for his profligacy (and the referee's decision not to award what looked like a clear penalty when Boetang felled Silva in the box).
Bayern Munich Vs. Manchester City, 2011 UEFA Champions League: Mario Gomez Gives Hosts Lad
It did take Bayern a long while to take control of the match, but a succession of good chances has finally resulted in a goal. Minutes after Bastian Schweinsteiger missed a complete sitter, blazing over from a couple of yards, Joe Hart's guard was breached. The move started with Franck Ribery cutting in from the left and unleashing a shot that the England goalkeeper did well to save, but the defence had switched off and allowed Thomas Muller the rebound. Somehow Hart kept that one out too, but when the ball fell to Mario Gomez (Gael Clichy spent this exchange standing nearby looking confused) there was absolutely nothing hart could do to stop it. That's 1-0 to Bayern then.
