Osvaldo Alonso scored a late first-half goal and then scored an 89th minute equalizer to salvage a point for the Seattle Sounders, who clinched a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals with their 2-2 tie against Comunicaciones on Tuesday. The goals were Alonso's first of the CCL play, and both came off loose balls in the box.
Comunicaciones Vs. Seattle Sounders, 2011 CONCACAF Champions League: Osvaldo Alonso Scores Two, Secures Point
The Sounders ended up going 2-0-1 in Mexico and Central America during the group stage, making them the first MLS team to go undefeated south of the border. They can become the second MLS team to win their group by getting at least a point when they host Monterrey on Oct. 18. Monterrey would win the group if they can come away with all three points.
For most of the evening, it was a frustrating game for the Sounders, who dominated the match but found themselves trailing for much of it. Comunicaciones took their first lead in the 7th minute on a goal from Transito Montepeque. They reclaimed the lead in the 64th minute when Rafael Morales pounced on a poor clearance by Sounders goalkeeper Kasey Keller.
The Sounders put eight shots on frame, many of them quality opportunities. Fredy Montero had a shot hit off the crossbar late and Alvaro Fernandez was unable to put away the rebound.
