Marseille Vs. Borussia Dortmund, 2011 UEFA Champions League: Bundesliga Champions Downed 3-0 In Game Of Wasted Chances

An odd game sees Borussia Dortmund in real trouble in Champions League Group F after the German champions were downed 3-0 by Marseille in a game they arguably deserved more from. The numbers tell a startling story - 21 shots to Marseille’s 8, 59% possession, 11 corners to 4 - but, obviously, the number that matters most is points, and Marseille now have six to Dortmund’s one (and Arsenal’s four).

Mario Goetze was brilliant for the visitors throughout, aside from his finishing, and it game as something of a shock when Andre Ayew put Marseille ahead in the 20th minute with a low long-range effort. Like a hive of particularly talented bees, Dortmund continued to press the attack, only go find themselves further behind in second half, when Loic Remy took advantage of Mats Hummel's wayward header to slot past Roman Weidenfeller and make it 2-0. In between those goals, Goetze had hit the post and missed a one on one with Steve Mandanda.

Things got worse for the visitors when Remy won a penalty shortly after the second goal, with Ayew sending Weidenfeller the wrong way and creating an unassailable lead for a side that was distinctly second best throughout the match. Jordan Ayew was dismissed very late on, but that’ll hardly be enough to ruin an excellent day for Marseille.
