Bob Bradley could have options as he looks for a new job. A month after being relieved of his duties as United States manager, the American is now a candidate for the Santos Laguna job, while remaining a finalist to be the Egypt manager. His consideration for the Egypt post dates back a few weeks, but the possibility of taking over Santos appears to have just come around in the last 24 hours.
Bob Bradley Interviewing With Santos Laguna, Still Candidate For Egypt Post
Late Sunday night, reports out of Mexico indicated that Bradley was on his way to Torreon to take the Santos job. Many were skeptical that it was true until pictures began popping up of him at the airport at Torreon. All of a sudden the reports gained steam.
On Monday morning, the question is whether Bradley was there to interview for the job or that he’d already been pegged as Santos’ top candidate and only contract details had to be worked out. There were reports that he’d both taken the job and was interviewing for the job. Interim manager Eduardo Rergis cleared everything up at an afternoon press conference though.
“Santos have more options for coach, Bradley isn’ t only one,” Reris said. “Yesterday we had contact with others on the phone.”
So Bradley is a candidate, not Santos’ choice. He is the only one in Torreon though and Rergis did go on to say that Bradley would meet with club officials later in the day so it’s not just interest on Bradley’s end only. Santos is at least interested and very possibly extremely interested with him possibly being the team’s top choice at the moment.
While all this is going on, Bradley remains a candidate for the Egypt job. He was named as one of Egypt’s three finalists a few weeks ago, but not decision had been made. All talk about the job had quieted in the last week, but Bradley’s agent took to Twitter to clarify the situation on Monday.
Bob Bradley is in Torreon meeting with officials of Santos Laguna. Egyptian FA says they shall make a decision shortly.
Exactly what the Egyptian FA means by “shortly” is not clear. That could be a day or it could be two weeks. Meanwhile, Bradley is now a candidate for the Santos job.
If faced with a decision between Santos and Egypt, it stands to reason that Bradley would take the Santos job. They have good talent, with Felipe Baloy, Santiago Hoyos, Oribe Peralta and Juan Pablo Rodriguez so they're in a position to win. They are sound financially so it wouldn't be a surprise if Bradley is given funds to buy new players as well.
At the same time, Egypt has been awful in Africa Nations Cup qualifying and have been eliminated. They are older and short on talent so there isn’t much reason to believe that they can be turned around anytime soon. All in all, the Egypt job looks like a bit of a pit, while there is promise at Santos.
This is all assuming Bradley even has a choice. He’s a candidate for both jobs and maybe not even the top candidate. Exactly how much Santos and Egypt want Bradley remains unclear, but there is some level of interest and we are getting closer to a resolution with both jobs.
