Faryd Mondragon underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to repair an injury to the distal phalanx in his right ring finger. The Philadelphia Union said the preliminary prognosis is that their starting goalkeeper will be out four weeks. Mondragon suffered the injury on Saturday against Real Salt Lake and was subbed off at halftime. Up until then, he had played every minute of every regular-season game.

Assuming that prognosis is accurate, Mondragon could miss as many as six of the Union's remaining nine matches. That also means backup goalkeeper Zac MacMath is likely to get an extended look just as the Union's season has been sent into a mini-crisis.
For most of the season, the Union have looked to be one of the top contenders for the Eastern Conference crown. But after six straight matches without a win, they find themselves just two points ahead of the New York Red Bulls and Portland Timbers, who are even on points and occupy the final playoff spot.
