Columbus Crew Reportedly Sign Ben Speas To Homegrown Player Contract

One of the more under-the-radar stories of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft has been the saga of Columbus Crew academy product Ben Speas. The North Carolina junior is coming off a season in which he scored seven goals and had 10 assists and probably would have been seriously considered for a Generation Adidas contract if he had been unattached. When word leaked out that he was not enrolled in classes, speculation grew that he had signed with the Crew.

Now, the Washington Post’s Steven Goff is reporting that is exactly what has happened:

Signing Speas would just be the latest move in what has been an impressively busy offseason for the Crew. Last week, they signed Chilean international Milovan Mirosevic and Olman Vargas out of Costa Rica. All three players could help bolster an attack that was not nearly potent enough.
