Seattle Sounders Seal Deal For Christian Sivebaek

The Seattle Sounders roster just continues to get bigger, this time with the signing of Danish fullback/midfielder Christian Sivebæk. He was first linked to the club a month ago and the player even confirmed that he would be joining the Sounders so this signing is no surprise, but now the ink is on the paper and Seattle has themselves a valuable depth player.

“Christian is a player that we have been following for quite some time,” Sounders technical director Chris Henderson said in a team release. “He is a good one-versus-one dribbler who can provide consistent quality service to our strikers. He has good speed and physical presence.

“He has been an up and coming player in Denmark,” added Henderson, “and we are looking forward to adding Christian to our attacking arsenal.”

Sivebæk - the son of former Manchester United player John Sivebæk - played 80 times for Midtjylland in the Danish Superliga, but saw his playing time dwindle last season. The 23-year-old was also a fixture on the Denmark youth national teams and now he’ll join Michael Gspurning Adam Johansson as new Sounders signings from the European cold.

While Henderson may continue to look at Sivebæk as an addition to the attack, it is his more defensive nature that makes him a good pick up for the Sounders. Sivebæk played primarily as a right back for Midtjylland, although he prefers to be in the midfield, and is a more defensive player that their current right midfielder, Mauro Rosales. Now if Sigi Schmid would like to protect a lead or play differently tactically against certain opponents, he has the option to do so with Sivebæk.
