Wigan Vs. Man City, 2012 Premier League: City Win 1-0

A Manchester City team firing on all cylinders would have made very light work of Roberto Martinez's Wigan Athletic, home or away. A City team missing some of their most influential players and performing sleepily on top of that? Turns out they still win, but it's far more laboured.

After a rough start, Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko got the visitors on the scoresheet with an extremely well-taken backwards header from a corner kick, but relatively poor finishing (and, in one bizarre moment, a last-ditch tackle on Sergio Aguero by Dzeko) prevented them from adding to the lead. Wigan, for their part, were unable to seriously threaten Joe Hart save for one opportunity early in the second half when the England number one foiled James McCarthy, and the outcome was never seriously in doubt in the game's final stages despite the score being close.

Despite being unimpressive, City were still good enough to re-establish their three point lead over Manchester United, which is all anyone really could have asked for from. Wigan remain bottom after one of their patented ‘spirited, but not quite good enough’ displays.
