Danny Cruz has been traded to D.C. United after the Houston Dynamo elected not to pick up his option for the 2012 season. In exchange for Cruz, the Dynamo received "partial allocation," which is assumed to mean something less than $75,000.

Although United has just 24 players on their current roster, midfield is one area in which they are reasonably deep. Cruz is one of 11 players listed as a midfielder and with Andy Najar a lock to start on the right, he will be fighting for minutes along with recent draft pick Nick DeLeon and holdovers like Chris Pontius.
“We’re pleased to have concluded a deal to acquire Danny from Houston,” said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. “He is a tenacious player who brings a lot of energy and bite to the midfield and we are thrilled to have him at United. At 22, he has enormous upside and we look forward to his contributions for years to come.”
During his three seasons with the Dynamo, Cruz often showed promise, but rarely did so on a consistent basis. He scored four goals and had five assists over the past two seasons while appearing in 45 games, but starting just 27. Cruz has shown enough potential to earn call-ups to several United States youth national teams, most recently appearing in the 2009 U-20 World Cup.
