Mustapha Jarju never seemed to quite click with the Vancouver Whitecaps after he signed with them last July. Apparently, new Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie was not interested in making the most of the situation, as the two sides mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced on Friday. Thus ends one of the least successful Designated Player experiments in MLS history.

Whitecaps cut Designated Player Mustafa Jarju, fail to come to terms with Residency-product Philippe Davies and acquire an international roster spot.
During a little less than half a season in Vancouver, the 25-year-old Gambian international made just 10 appearances and never scored. While he showed hints of promise at times, it was never enough to start regularly as he played 450 minutes during his MLS career.
On the same day, the Whitecaps continued their rather massive makeover as they also failed to come to terms with Philippe Davies, who was a 21-year-old product of their Residency program. Davies never appeared in a game for the Whitecaps. In cutting ties with the midfielder, the Whitecaps have just one Canadian under contract. Perhaps related to that fact, the Whitecaps also acquired an international roster spot from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for allocation money. The Whitecaps also picked up a second-round pick in the 2014 SuperDraft.
