Barcelona may be on a high after eliminating Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey earlier this week, but back in league play things are starting to sour for the Catalans. On the same day that Madrid picked up another league win, Barcelona dropped points again as they couldn't find a goal and had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Villarreal. Now Barcelona find themselves seven points back of Madrid as their three-year La Liga champions runs threatens to come to an end.
Villarreal Vs. Barcelona, 2012 La Liga: Barcelona Drop Points In Scoreless Draw
There weren't a ton of chances for either side and while Barcelona will correctly feel that they were better the side, they were far from good. Lionel Messi had an early chance to put the visitors in front, but his chip went wide. Cesc Fabregas nearly netted the winner late on, but his shot hit the cross bar. Villarreal had brief moments of brightness as they tried to get forward, but they never really threatened the Barcelona defense even after Gerard Pique was taken off for Alexis Sanchez.
In the end, Barcelona just couldn’t break Villarreal down. Their passes were just a bit off all night and by the end they had to walk off the field at the Madrigal wondering if their run as champions might be coming to an end.
