Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has completed his long-rumored switch from the Viola to Genoa, officially making his move on Tuesday. Genoa have paid a transfer fee of €8 million for the 29-year-old Italian international, and there's no reason to believe that he won't instantly slot into their first-choice XI.

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino has made a move to Genoa, the clubs confirmed Tuesday.
This seems like a bit of a lateral move on the surface for Gilardino, but he’s a man who was in need of a change of scenery. His first year at Fiorentina went very well, and he was successful with a slight drop-off in form in the 2010-11 season. The start of this season has been rough for Gilardino, however, and he has just two goals in the current Serie A campaign.
Genoa are sitting in tenth place in Serie A with 21 points from 16 games. Their defensive record has been respectable, but their goal-scoring record is poor. Rodrigo Palacio is having a solid season, but Genoa was a team very much in need of depth and additional quality at the striker position. Gilardino will look to hit the ground running and return to goal-scoring form as he attempts to fight his way back into the Italy team ahead of Euro 2012.
