Liverpool's form has improved since their early season woes, but they now face a hugely difficult task in facing 2nd-placed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea vs. Liverpool 2012: Preview and tv schedule
Chelsea are expected to overwhelm Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, but will have to be wary of Luis Suarez and company.
The Blues have been in superb early-season form and have led the table for most of the campaign, with Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata lighting up the Premier League. In contrast, Liverpool have been playing beneath themselves, although a creditable draw with Newcastle last week was indicative of their steadying form.
A defeat for Brendan Rodgers would be a setback, despite them being heavy underdogs. Chelsea have already let first place slip, and with Manchester United victorious over Aston Villa, would see daylight between them and the league leaders. With the array of talented and in-form attacking players they have, they should be able to find a way past Liverpool's defence, but will need to be wary of the equally in-form Luis Suarez.
Chelsea injuries and suspensions
Out: Ashley Cole (hamstring), Frank Lampard (thigh)
Liverpool injuries and suspensions
Out: Lucas (hip), Fabio Borini(ankle), Martin Kelly (knee). In doubt: Pepe Reina (hamstring)
John Terry is back from suspension for Chelsea and could make his first start since returning, but fellow veterans Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard are still out.
Liverpool have the usual long-term injuries, but Pepe Reina could be ready to return to action for the Reds if Brendan Rodgers chooses to displace Brad Jones.
